A former leading fashion model who was 5'10'' in height, Carey was a favorite with high-end American designers such as Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. Her father, who was a renowned scientist who won the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists' 1979 Scientist of Year award, is a highly respected geoscientist. Carey was raised throughout the world because of her father's work. While she was at the University of Colorado at part-time and was able to catch the attention of the Ford model Agency representative in New York. She briefly spent time and studied in Paris before returning to New York. Her modeling and academic career rocketed and she was featured on Glamour's, Vogue's and a variety of other magazines' covers. While she was modeling, she was also a full-time student, completing a master's degree in literary studies at New York University.
